This country has been rocked with riots in every century since its inception. This article marks the first in a series of articles I intend to post that highlight these riots. This one deals with the New York Draft Riots of 1963, in which white mobs rioted over the Civil War draft. Resentment over the fact that richer whites were able to pay $300 to get out of being drafted, a mob of people - mainly Irish-Americans - took their frustration out first on rich whites and the government - burning down government buildings and mobbing and looting rich white homes. Soon, however, their resentment turned racist and they began attacking black people - neither men, women nor children were spared from beatings, killings and lynchings. Corpses were mutilated, set on fire, even sexually mutilated and defiled, with at least one male lynching victim being pulled through the streets by his genitals. The white mob rioted for four straight days and nights, destroying churches, an orphanage, government buildings and countless homes. Many blacks left Manhattan permanently for Brooklyn and New Jersey because of the violence and lynchings. Total damage in today's currency was estimated at about $95 million. The death toll was around 200, with about 2000 injured.
