On May 29, republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney released a copy of what he said was his "Certificate of Live Birth" to Reuters news agency. The certificate, presumably released to quell questions about Romney's eligibility to run for office, has only raised more concerns. The first and most important of these concerns is that the document is a "Certificate of Live Birth". When President Obama released a document with the same name, the right wing claimed that it was not a valid birth certificate and demanded that the president release a long-form birth certificate. Why has it taken so long for Mitt Romney to release a birth certificate, only to have it turn out to be an "invalid" one? Where is the "real" one?
The second concern is that Mitt Romney's father was listed as having been born in Mexico. This raises the same issue that angered the right so much about President Obama. They claimed that having a foreign-born parent means that one is not "natural-born". Now, some have already claimed that Romney's grandfather was a U.S. citizen, which makes him eligible. However, Obama's mother was a U.S. citizen and they already rejected her citizenship as not good enough. In addition, I don't recall seeing Romney's grandfather's birth certificate. If he were truly American-born, Romney should offer it up as proof.
Another concern is that the certificate seems to have been cut off at the bottom. What was written or stamped on the bottom of that certificate that Romney didn't want the nation to see?
Finally, the date of issue stamped on the certificate is January 18, 2012. Why has it taken more than four months for Romney to finally release the document to the public? Did it take that long to Photoshop the photo?
Romney owes this nation no more and no less proof of his eligibility than President Obama did. Will he be forthcoming and release the real, long-form birth certificate?
