Yesterday I read a story about a person that was forced to sit and listen to the political rantings of coworkers over lunch. The coworkers were complaining and repeating conspiracy stories about President Obama, but the man, who was a democrat, did not speak up out of fear of being ganged up on and ostracized. Apparently, democrats are in the minority in his office and maybe he was afraid to make waves or even jeopardize his position.
While I can certainly understand someone's reticence at revealing their political persuasian in a hostile atmosphere (whichever persuasion they happen to be), I have also heard people say they are afraid to speak out at family gatherings (holidays, weddings, reunions, etc.) or among groups of friends that don't share their political beliefs.
Have you ever been in a work or social situation and felt intimidated into keeping quiet about your political persuasion (whichever it may be)? Have you ever refrained from taking part in a political discussion because you thought there might be repercussions (financial, social, etc.)? What made you afraid to speak out? Have you ever suffered negative consquences at home, at work, or among friends due to your political leanings?
Please take the poll and leave a comment. Thank you.
