Until recently I was proud to say that I wouldn't know or recognize a Justin Bieber song if my life depended upon it. That changed a few weeks ago in a restaurant in New York City. A monitor was playing a Justin Bieber video, so we had no choice but to hear his music. My husband turned to me and said, "I think he's singing 'You smile, I smile", but doesn't it sound like he's singing "You smell, I smell"? Since that time I have (unfortunately) heard the song a few more times in various stores, and now that's all I hear. "You smell, I smell".
One of the funniest instances of misheard lyrics I've known came from my 8 year old. I was listening to the oldies on Slacker - yes, that's right - Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is practically an oldie now! When he heard the line "Here we are now, entertain us" he piped up from the back seat, "Why is he singing "I'm as stupid as potatoes"? Now it's a running joke with us. When that song comes on, we sing it his way.
