Investigators said it appears that overnight workers cleaning a deep-fry area of the kitchen used a chemical that looks like kosher salt. Then Friday morning, when it came time to salt the French fries, a worker used the material left on the table.

This story is over two weeks old, but I wanted to seed it b/c I have a theory about what happened.

I think it is entirely possible that the worker didn't speak English and couldn't read the label. Let's go on the supposition that this is true. If so, I think that, immigration debate aside, this illustrates the need for all people who come to this country and want to work around the public to learn english.

This could have been a tragedy, and it probably won't be the last time something like this happens. I am pretty liberal when it comes to social issues, but I do believe we have problems when it comes to immigrants not wanting to learn English.

I would hate to move to Germany or China and poison people becuase I was too stubborn to learn German or Chinese.

I also believe that workers should have a level of language and literacy needed for the workplace. But does it come down to them 'not wanting to learn English'?

If your supposition is true, I would have expected these workers' supervisor to at least show them the salt packet.

Do they not WANT to learn English? I'm not sure. But if my premise is correct and this had to do with not understanding english, then I want to know why someone woudn't take the time to learn the most basic words. If you are working in a restaurant, learn what's in your kitchen - learn the words for salt, metal cleaner, cleanser, etc.
